"Lula's Hegemony and Brazilian Labor Relations: The Case of Call Center and their Unions"

About the Speaker:

Ruy Braga is a professor at the Department of Sociology of the University of São Paulo (USP). Holding an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences (1994), a M.A in Sociology (1996) and a PhD in Social Sciences, all from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Prof. Braga currently is the Director of USP s Center for the Studies of Citizenship Rights (Cenedic) and the Writing Secretary of the magazine Outubro (periodical of the Institute of Socialistic Studies ). Deputy Editor of the magazine Societies Without Borders (dissemination agency of the Sociologists Without Borders association), Prof. Braga was the Vice-Chair of USP s Department of Sociology from 2005 and 2009 and is the President of the Human Resources General Commission of USP s Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences (FFLCH). Along with Marco Aurélio Santana, since 2007 Prof. Braga coordinates the Working Group of the Brazilian Sociology Society (SBS), Sindicato, trabalho e ações coletivas ( Union, work and collective actions ), besides being the coordinator, along with Armando Boito Júnior, of the Working Group of the National Association of Graduate Studies in Social Sciences (Anpocs), untitled Marxismo e Ciências Sociais ( Marxism and Social Sciences ) (2008-2009). Prof. Braga has published articles and essays in several specialized periodicals, such as: Social Forces, Work and Occupations, Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais, Sociedade e Estado, and Proteo (Rome), among others. He is the author of the book "A nostalgia do fordismo: Modernização e crise na teoria da sociedade salarial" (SP: Xamã, 2003), and the co-author of the books "Por uma sociologia pública" (with Michael Burawoy, Alameda, 2009), "Infoproletários" (with Ricardo Antunes, Boitempo, 2009) and "Hegemonia às avessas" (with Francisco de Oliveira, Boitempo, 2010), among others.
