The Impact of the Bauls of Bengal on the Philosophy and works of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

Sharmila Roy, internationally acclaimed Bengali singer, composer, and concert and recording artist, will deliver a special presentation on Tagore as delivered recently at Oxford University.

Educated at Shantiniketan and the Sorbonne, her work on the major events of Tagore's life was published in India in 2003. She will make references to the works of Tagore's student Arnold Adriaan Bake, the Dutch ethnomusicologist whom her father knew well, and mentor of UCLA's late distinguished professor of Ethnomusicology, Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy. This will be an enlightening presentation, especially appropriate as it coincides with Tagore's 150th year observances (1861 - 2011).

Sharmila Roy studied at Pathabhavan, the experimental school of Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan (1955-65). She studied the English literature at the University of Kolkata (1965-68) and joined Kalabhavan, the Art-faculty founded by Nandalal Bose at Santiniketan where she studied drawing, painting, art-history and specialised in graphic-arts as a national scholar (1968-75). She obtained a French -government scholarship to study the art of etching with Stanley William Hayter(1975-79) at Atelier 17 and did her D.E.A. (doctoral studies) at the Sorbonne, Paris 3rd. Currently, among other activities, she is teaching musicology at L’Inalco, Sorbonne Paris 9th.
