
Filemón Beltrán Morales
Filemón Beltrán Morales visits UCLA from Zoogocho, a Zapotec community in Oaxaca, Mexico. He will discuss immigration, culture, and language from a Zoogochense perspective. A published author, poet, language activist, and well respected musician, Filemón Beltran Morales has a unique perspective on the role of culture and language in internal migration of indigenous groups within Mexico. Having worked in the Dirección General de Educación Indígena (DGEI) of the Mexican Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) since 1990, he has worked as the Assistant Director for the Promotion of Reading and Writing in Indigenous Languages since 2002.
