GROWTH & STABILITY IN AFRICA. Mr. Azoulay will discuss Morocco’s role in Africa and importance of continent wide cooperation. He will address the importance of peace and stability as prerequisites to economic growth and share his predictions and expectations for Africa.
André David Azoulay is Senior Advisor to His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, President of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures, President of the Executive Committee of the Foundation for the Three Cultures and the Three Religions, based in Seville, Spain, a founding member of the C-100 Davos Forum for the Dialogue of Civilizations and religions and Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the Shimon Peres Center for Peace.
Born in Essaouira-Mogador, Morocco, Mr. Azoulay was educated in Paris where he studied economics, journalism and international relations. He is presently Senior Advisor to His Majesty Mohammed VI and before that to his father, His Majesty the late King Hassan II. In his capacity as advisor, he is largely credited with implementing economic reforms that have revitalized the private sector and encouraging international investments that have powered economic growth in Morocco. Prior to his current position, he had a long career with the Paribas Bank in Paris as Executive Vice-President of Middle East and North Africa Regions as well as head of the Bank Public Affairs department. Mr. Azoulay is an ardent ambassador of Morocco throughout the world and has been instrumental in improving relations with the European Union and the USA.
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Azoulay is a strong advocate for peace and dialogue between the Arab Muslim World and that of the Jewish Communities in Europe, the United States, Morocco as well as the global Arab and Jewish diasporas. For over 30 years he has taken an active part in supporting organizations and initiatives whose primary purpose is to foster better understanding and mutual respect between Islam and the Western World. He is well known for contributions to the peace process in the Middle East and for the many interfaith cross-cultural initiatives he has spearheaded.
In 1974, Mr. Azoulay founded “Identité et Dialogue”, a Sephardic Jewish group, in Paris, which later became one of the first Jewish organisations to call for a Palestinian State that co-exists in peace, side by side with Israel. In 2005, Mr. Azoulay was nominated member of the High Level Group for the Alliance of Civilizations, set up by the United Nations, co-sponsored by Spain and Turkey to address relations between Islam and the Western World. In 2006, Mr. Azoulay received an honorary doctorate from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev “as a Jew whose roots lie in Morocco, who has devoted his time and energy to a life-long quest for coexistence between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East and Northern Africa.”
Mr. Azoulay is also a fervent supporter of the revival of his home town which has a specific place in the historical, cultural and spiritual heritage of Morocco. He is the founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Foundation for Arts, Culture and Heritage as well as the President of the Association Essaouira-Mogador which has established an original approach to the durable development of the city based on its cultural and spiritual legacy.
Mr. Azoulay belongs to the Board of several economic and financial institutions. He is also a member of the Royal Academy of Morocco and of the Royal Academy of Spain for Economic and Financial Sciences. Doctor Honoris Causae of the Desert University (Bersheva), he has been honoured with the titles of “Commandeur dans l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur (France) and also “Commandeur dans l’Ordre du Trône” (Morocco).
