Unbounding Asia looks at how various boundaries (national, area, cultural, ethnic, etc.) are problematic constructs in the study of Asia. It consists of a lecture on the post-border condition in the imagination of the Asia-Pacific Rim (David Palumbo-Liu), a lecture on the rethinking of ethnicity in transnationality (Arif Dirlik), a lecture on nations on the internet (Stephanie Donald), and a lecture on Tagore's pan-Asian universalism (Esha Niyogi De). Finally, Bruce Cumings is being invited to present another lecture on the theme. This lecture series will culminate in a workshop in May 2002, for which the central focus will be Central Asia, that part of Asia that usually gets dropped out of the geographical, political, and cultural imagination of Asia. |
