The First Annual Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference on South Asia at UCLA Takes Place on May 6th

The First Annual Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference on South Asia at UCLA took place on Friday, May 6th, 2016 at the Charles E. Young Research Library Conference Center.

The First Annual Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference on South Asia at UCLA took place on Friday, May 6th, 2016 at the Charles E. Young Research Library Conference Center from 8 AM - 6: 30 PM. The conference showcased nine graduate student presentations from Master's and Doctoral students at various stages of their programs, from the following departments: Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, Comparative Literature, Art History, World Arts and Cultures, and Public Policy. Each presenter gave a 20-minute talk followed by 10 minutes for Q&A. We were pleased that both presentations and discussions were vibrant and constructive for presenters, and audience members were deeply impressed by the work graduate students were doing. We were fortunate to have in attendance Professor Mrinalini Sinha, Alice Freeman Palmer Professor of History from the University of Michigan, who delivered a captivating keynote address entitled, "Gandhi's Forgotten Campaign: The Abolition of Indenture and the Mahatma." Following the keynote, the audience and presenters enjoyed a catered lunch from Sunnin Lebanese Cafe and students and faculty were able to interact informally, which we were told was one of the most fruitful parts of the day. After lunch, five more graduate student presentations took place, and we ended the day with a reception for presenters and attendees where everyone was able to further interact and discuss the day's talks. We were extremely pleased with both the turnout for the event, with 85 people present from both UCLA and neighboring universities, and audience members consisting of undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. We look forward to many more successful conferences in the years to come.
