Romeo Guzman is a graduate student in the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology who studies music in the Jbala region of Northwest Morocco. He has studied both modern standard and Moroccan colloquial Arabic language as a summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellow. A recipient of the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad fellowship for 2009-2010, Romeo’s research explores the performance of Jbalan identity through musical practice and its connections to the tourist trade in Morocco.
