UCLA Film and Television Archive presents the Thai Film TROPICAL MALADY (Sud Pralad) (2004), directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul

After presenting Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s first two feature films (MYSTERIOUS OBJECT AT NOON and BLISSFULLY YOURS) as part of our “Bangkok: Cinema City” program in June, the Archive is proud to premiere in Los Angeles the latest from the rising star of Thai cinema.  The Jury Prize winner at Cannes and also the first Thai film admitted to the festival’s prestigious competition section, TROPICAL MALADY is divided into two distinct but interrelated parts: it begins in a naturalistic mode by describing an incipient idyll between a soldier and a young man from the countryside, then shifts abruptly into a fantastical register with a mysterious tale of shapeshifters and animistic spirits haunting the shadowy jungle.  Languidly paced and rigorously, if playfully, structured around a series of thematic oppositions—between light and dark, village and jungle, civilization and nature, the quotidian and the supernatural—TROPICAL MALADY is as enigmatic, haunting, and irreducibly original as Apichatpong’s previous experimental features.

The film will be introduced by director Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
