Home > Events > Access Indonesia Project: Use of Technology for Foreign Information Access

This presentation will demonstrate and discuss a three-year project (October 2002-October 2005) entitled ACCESS INDONESIA, funded by the US Department of Education under their Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (TICFIA) Program.  The main purpose of the project is to foster a fuller interdisciplinary understanding of Indonesia by using recent advances in Internet technology (e.g. Web-GIS).  The project is undertaken by the Center for International Policy, Planning, and Development (University of Southern California, Los Angeles, U.S.A.) and the Center for Urban and Regional Development Studies (Institute of Technology, Bandung, Indonesia).

The project website http://cippad.usc.edu/ai is still under construction and is planned to be officially launched in mid-April 2004. It has the following main sections: (i) thematic sections on culture, history, politics, economy, and geography, each of which includes full text documents (collected mainly from Indonesia), bibliographies, and information links; (ii) stat indo section, which includes approximately 200 statistical tables both in html and excel formats and statistical information links; (iii) slide indo section, which includes slide shows of Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Banjarmasin; (iv) News indo section, which includes summary news from different regions in Indonesia and news links; (v) Learning toolkits section, which will include interactive quizzes on Indonesia such as a multiple choice quiz on Indonesia and map exercises to locate islands and cities of Indonesia; (vi) Map indo section, which will include web-GIS maps of Indonesia.

The main purpose of the presentation will be to receive feedback from scholars and students and understand their information needs on Indonesia.

The presenters will include Dr. Koichi Mera (Director, Center for International Policy, Planning, and Development), Dr. Sukumar Ganapati (Assistant Director, Center for International Policy, Planning, and Development), Emel Ganapati (Project Manager, Center for International Policy, Planning, and Development), and Ridwan Sutriadi from Indonesia (Lecturer, Institute of Technology, Bandung).
