The UCLA Department of Art invites you to its first lecture in the "Art and Ritual Lecture Series" to be held Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at 5:30 pm in the EDA, 104 Kinross Building, 11000 Kinross Avenue, Westwood Village.

"The Art of Rice: Symbol and Meaning in Southeast Asian Village Tradition" will be presented by the dynamic anthropologist and photographer, Dr. Eric Crystal, Ph.D., Lecturer for the Group in Asian Studies and retired Vice-Chair of the Center for Southeast Asia Studies, UC Berkeley.

Rice is a staple food for more than three billion people in the world, most of them in Asia, but this staggering statistic only hints at the immense significance this grain has for Asian peoples. Through slides and video footage Dr. Crystal will discuss the fascinating relationship between Asian art, food, culture, philosophy and religion.

Admission is free but seating is limited. Refreshments will be served.
