Hmong Traditional Culture Studies: Research Perspectives for the Future

Anthropologist Eric Crystal has undertaken research on highland Southeast Asian cultures for over three decades.  His work has taken him to eastern Indonesia, Vietnam, and the California cental valley.  In Vietnanm he documented traditional Hmong village culture, working on a collaborative project funded by the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History and sponsored by the Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi.  He has worked in Merced, California with Hmong refugees for a number of years, documenting a vital and growing community of Southeast Asian highlanders in the northern central valley.

In his presentation, Dr. Crystal will present his views on the relevance and importance of traditional culture studies in Hmong communities.  His presentation will be illustrated with slides of northwestern Vietnam and the California central valley.
