Language teaching

With financial support from the CSEAS, UCLA now teaches Vietnamese, Tagalog, Thai and Indonesian at the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. The four languages are taught by experienced instructors within the UCLA Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.

Students seeking to extend their language competence are encouraged to enroll in one of the UC Education Abroad Programs (EAP) in Southeast Asia, or in the intensive Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI).

Workshops and technology

Together with colleagues at UCLA and on other campuses, the CSEAS supports and organizes workshops and conferences for language teachers, and promotes the development of new language teaching technologies and methods. In recent years, the CSEAS and its affiliated faculty have helped to organize workshops on a variety of issues of interest to the public and the academic community. The Center has also supported the development of Distance Learning technologies and path-breaking approaches to teaching heritage language students.

Content-based Materials for Heritage Learners of Filipino

A team of Filipino language instructors, some based at UCLA, have developed content-based instructional materials for a complete introductory Filipino course for heritage learners.
