The Centers for Southeast Asian Studies at UCLA and UC Berkeley form a consortium which, since 2000, has been designated a National Resource Center (NRC) under "Title VI of the Higher Education Act" of 1965. The Consortium links these two exceptional institutions with the aim of promoting understanding of the histories, languages, societies, and cultures of Southeast Asia and its peoples. Programs encompass on-campus and off-campus cultural and academic events, support for university teaching, and professional development for K-12 teachers. In keeping with its commitment to expanding and improving educational resources on Southeast Asia, CSEAS regularly organizes or contributes to training workshops and the development of curricular materials for California's K-12 teachers.

As part of its mission to stimulate scholarly interactions and exchanges, in 2000-2001 the CSEAS formally initiated the Southern California Network on Southeast Asian Studies (SoCal Network). Since then, faculty, students and others from more than thirty institutions have attended programs on a range of topics, including Indonesian politics, Philippine history, and Cambodian classical dance. In Spring 2003 the Network also sponsored the month-long visit to Southern California of Vietnamese lacquer artist Mr. Tran Long. The Network, which is coordinated by different institutions on a rotating basis, also provides support to members and serves as an advocate for Southeast Asian Studies in the region.
In addition to its extensive informal ties with scholars and universities around the world, the CSEAS has recently begun to establish formal partnerships with selected institutions whose work meshes especially well with its mission. In 2004, the CSEAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Further partnerships are anticipated in the coming years.
CSEAS is committed to building mutually beneficial partnerships with Southern California's vibrant Southeast Asian communities and all others interested in Southeast Asia. It has worked with local organizations such as the Los Angeles Thai Community Development Center and the Long Beach Khmer Arts Academy, to co-host speakers and artists of interest both to campus and local audiences. It has also worked with UCLA student and alumni groups in organizing conferences and cultural events.
The Asia Institute is a consortium of UCLA's Asia-focused research centers and programs, including two U.S. Department of Education-designated National Resource Centers. The Asia Institute promotes Asian Studies at UCLA and fosters greater understanding of Asia through a wide variety of outreach activities including teacher training, curriculum development, public symposia, film series, and exhibitions.
