In 2001, UCLA established an Interdepartmental Degree Program (IDP) in Southeast Asian Studies, the first of its kind in Southern California. The IDP offers Bachelor's degrees, minors and honors programs. Students in the IDP and in other departments may choose from a wide variety of courses about Southeast Asia. Candidates for the degree in Southeast Asian Studies must complete two years of a Southeast Asian language, and most spend some time in Southeast Asia. Learn more about the degree program »
UCLA's CSEAS and IDP in Southeast Asian Studies strongly encourage UCLA students to study in Southeast Asia through the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) to gain language and culture experience. EAP works together with the host universities to ensure that those programs meet the highest possible academic standards. Southeast Asian EAP programs currently operate in Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore. Students wishing to study Indonesia should attend EAP Singapore where Indonesian language is taught in the Southeast Asian Studies program. (This program also teaches Thai and Vietnamese language.) Students wishing to study in Indonesia itself or in other countries without an EAP, may do so through non-UC programs, provided they are approved by UCLA. EAP partners with other study abroad programs that are available to non-U.C. students (who are ineligible for EAP). For example EAP Philippines partners with the University of the Philippines Philippine Studies Program to provide Summer and Fall instruction in Tagalog/Filipino language and a history and culture curriculum. Non-U.C. students can apply directly through the website. This program is identical in content to the EAP Summer and Fall programs, but does not award academic credit and so is not eligible to be funded with official financial aid. In Vietnam, EAP collaborates with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), which offers Spring and year-long programs in addition to the joint Fall program with EAP. In Thailand, EAP is based at the Thammasat University Office of International Affairs which offers admission to non-UC students directly through its website.
Summer advanced language programs for American students are also available in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
UCLA does not offer an MA or Ph.D in Southeast Asian Studies, but there are ample opportunities for graduate study related to Southeast Asia under the auspices of various departments, including History, Anthropology, Political Science, Asian Languages and Cultures, Asian American Studies, Ethnomusicology, World Arts and Cultures, and Public Health. Prospective students must first apply for admission to the relevant department. Graduate study at UCLA
