UCLA is the only university in southern California offering instruction in four Southeast Asian languages to its students. Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies was able to provide this glimpse of Indonesian language to middle and high school students. The featured speakers are Indonesian-American young people who attend Los Angeles-area schools. Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, with almost as many people as the United States. A large percentage – 86% -- are Muslim, making Indonesia the largest Muslim country in the world. Learning the Indonesian language can introduce Americans to a vibrant Indonesian culture as well as provide a view of Islam that is uniquely Southeast Asian, not Middle Eastern.
