International Conference on
BUSINESS -- SOCIAL PARTNERSHIP:
BEYOND PHILANTHROPY

DECEMBER 4-7, 2002

DEADLINE FOR PRE-REGISTRATION: DECEMBER 31, 2001

Conference website: http://www.iimcal.ac.in/cdep/conference.asp

Background of the Conference

The rapid pace of change today frequently exceeds the capacity of national and international institutions to adapt. Part of the solutions could be found in the emergence of "global policy networks" which bring together international institutions, civil society and private sector organizations and national governments in pursuit of common goals. Kofi AnnanSecretary - General, United Nations

Globalisation and the increasingly multinational nature of business and electronic means of communication have led a rise in the powers of the business community and to a reduction in the powers of the nation - state to affect development. With global influence comes global responsibility. One such public policy network that has won wide praise is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Tackling issues of social and environmental concern no longer rests solely with government but has obligation of the business community. Does this transfer of governmental responsibilities to the other sectors lend itself to greater levels of collaboration between the private sector and NGOs?

The Focus of the Conference

A coherent Corporate Social Responsibility based on integrity, sound values and a long-term approach offers clear business benefits to companies and a positive contribution to the well being of society. This requires discussing certain questions by all sectors: What are the respective roles of government and private sector in providing social, educational and health services? How far along the supply chain does a company's responsibility extend? How should it adapt to local cultures? How far into the future should a company plan? etc.etc.

Therefore, the focus of the conference will be to discuss the strategies in order to develop new collaborative relationship between business, government and the NGOs. The purpose is to explore the scope for shared power and control for these stakeholders that will help them to realise their respective organizational goals in a globalised world. Who Should Participate
