Cities
in transitional economies have undergone a phenomenal transformation.
To what extent can this transformation be captured by the
narrative of so-called 'market-transition'? Or, does the
transformation present more similarities to what have been
seen in the cities under globalisation? The session attempts
to present the insights from urban China as well as other
cities in transitional economies with regard to urban development,
social inequality, spatial restructuring and socio-economic
implications. We particularly welcome theoretical and empirical
studies to reposition the cities in transitional economies
in a wider context.
The
fundamental economic and social transformations in Chinese
cities over the last 25 years provide a very rich environment
for the study of urban processes and transition. There is
an emerging literature on Chinese urban development in recent
years. Based on the understanding that China has re-entered
the global system, most studies applied one or another established
Western theories to explain the changes in the Chinese context.
Less has been done in developing new explanations of the
dynamics of the urban transformation. There are also not
enough researches that situate Chinese cities in the notion
of 'cities in transitional economies.' Will the socialist
market economy create similar or different cities from what
we have known? Are there any better ways to explain the
development of Chinese cities? There are some of the questions
we would like to address. Within the broad theme of urban
China, we particularly welcome papers which are linking
transition in China and in other transitional economies
to a wider international context. Potential areas include:
·
Political economic theories and urban transition
· New social and economic orders of urban societies
· Governance and management of transitional cities
· Globalisation and local development in the cities
of transitional economies
· Specific reform policies which have significant
implications for the future of urban development, such as
inequality, segregation and integration
