Conference Themes:

Wall Painting Conservation--Wall paintings and sculpture, with particular focus on earth-based materials. Conservation principles and practices. Education and training in wall painting conservation.

Site and Visitor Management--Methodologies and practices. Carrying capacity studies. Managing tourism at heritage sites.

Scientific Research in Conservation--Deterioration processes. Environmental, microclimatic, and color monitoring. Analytical research on pigments and binding media. Geotechnical aspects of conservation of sites.

Other Research Topics--Historical and art historical research of relevance to Silk Road sites and their conservation.

Papers and posters on the conference themes are invited. Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results, and conclusions of the paper. Preference will be given to papers dealing with methodological approaches that are broadly applicable to sites and conditions encountered on the Silk Road. English abstracts--350 words min. to 450 words max.; Chinese abstracts--420 characters min. to 540 characters max. Full papers will be required prior to the conference in order that translators may have time to review the text before the oral presentation. Posters (in English or Chinese)--No review process for posters. Details on the submission and review of abstracts and on the preparation of posters will be provided in the spring 2002 update announcement. Conference proceedings--will be published subsequently, in English only. Final acceptance of selected texts for publication will depend upon review of the full-length paper. Authors will have the opportunity to revise their text prior to publication.

Important Dates: August 2001--first announcement; December 2001--deadline for returning form the the Getty Conservation Institute in order to receive further mailings; Spring 2002--update announcement (with further details); October 2002--deadline for submission of abstracts; January 2003--notification of acceptance of abstracts and mailing of guidelines to authors; April 2003--deadline for conference registration and post-conference tour reservation; June 2003--deadline for submission of full text of papers for presentation.

Registration Information:
Because of limited facilities, the number of conference delegates is restricted to 100 from within China and 100 from the rest of the world.

Non-China delegates--US $350. This covers: conference registration fee; conference program and abstracts; transportation between airport and hotel in Dunhuang, and daily transportation between Dunhuang and conference hall at Mogao; Lunches, coffee breaks, and conference banquet; conference bag and hat; two guided visits to selected caves at Mogao grottoes.

Cost: US $1,300. This covers: round-trip flight from Beijing to Dunhuang; two-night stay at Movenpick Hotel (near Beijing airport) or Capital Hotel (near Tiananmen Square); five-night stay at Dunhuang Hotel (breakfast included); seven evening meals; ground transportation in Beijing. Participants will need to arrange their own travel to China, for arrival in Beijing by Saturday, August 23, 2003. Those participating in the 10-day post conference tour of sites in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region may prefer to leave China at the end of the tour from Urumqi instead of Beijing, for a stop-over in Tashkent or Istanbul on their way back home.
