1905 Japan captured the northeastern Chinese city of Mukden (Shenyang) during the Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese and Russian empires were struggling for dominance over Northeastern Asia. The Treaty of Portsmouth brought the war to a formal close.

1945 Some 300 United States bombers attacked Tokyo. This raid devastated the Japanese capital, killing tens of thousands of people.
