1890 Japan held its first general election for the Diet (under the newly promulgated Constitution).
1979 Oil prices jumped 30% in Japan (consequence of concerted OPEC price increases).
1987 Toshiba's chairman and president resigned because a subsidiary sold the USSR submarine propeller technology. The US punished Toshiba by suspending its import license.
