1894 Japan and Britain signed a treaty abolishing extraterritoriality for British subjects in Japan (start of the end for the "unequal treaties").

1935 The Japanese army was reorganized by the Toseiha (Control) faction in an attempt to limit the influence of the Kodoha (Imperial Way) faction.

1999 The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare's announced that, for the first time in two decades, more than 50% of households reported having financial difficulties.
