1998 Chinese and Japanese Communist Party leaders Jiang Zemin and Fuwa Tetsuzô met in Beijing and pledged to strengthen ties which were broken after JCP officials were assaulted in China in 1967.

2000 In Okinawa to attend the G-8 Summit, US President Bill Clinton pledged to reduce the American footprint on the island. (more than half of the U.S. forces in Japan on less than 1% of the country's land mass).
