1858 US and Japan signed their first commercial treaty.

1937 In the first weeks of the Pacific War, Japanese forces took Tianjin, a northern Chinese city.

1997 The governor of Kumamoto Prefecture declared the mercury levels in fish and shellfish from Minamata Bay were now safe for consumption. A net keeping fish from leaving the bay was removed.
