First nonstop transpacific flight, from Tokyo to Wenatchee,
Washington. The flight began on October 3 and took 41.5 hours to cover
5,000 miles.
1937
U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt makes his "quarantine
speech" in Chicago. Attacking the Japanese invasion of China,
Roosevelt said, "When an epidemic of physical disease starts to
spread, the community approves and joins in a quarantine of the
patients in order to protect the health of the community against the
spread of the disease."
