December 10

1974 SATO Eisaku (1901-1975) received the Nobel Peace Prize. Sato served as prime minister of Japan from 1964 to 1972. The Nobel Prize was awarded Sato because of his steadfast antinuclear diplomacy. Sato shared the prize with Sean MacBride, president of the International Peace Bureau (Geneva) and United Nations Commissioner for Namibia. United Nations University and the Sato Memorial Foundation sponsor an annual essay contest to stimulate thought on conflict resolution.
