The monthly magazine Popular Cinema 《大众电影》began polling readers for this award in 1962. On March 3, 2000, the China Daily reported that popular interest in this award had declined dramatically. In 1989, 2.3 million people cast ballots for their favorite films and artists. In 1999 only 30,000 people voted -- including votes cast via the internet. Several publications have noted the steady decline of the Chinese film industry. A decade ago it was producing 150-200 films a year but now turns out only 100 films -- which are mostly ignored by the dwindling number of Chinese theater-goers. There are many reasons for the decline including increasing competition from other entertainment, the challenge of piracy, and often sterile product. Recently, some theaters have dramatically slashed ticket prices and attendance has picked up. Voting for the Hundred Flowers Awards has shot up. According to China Daily (Nov. 23, 2000), about 600,000 votes were cast, including 107,897 via the internet.
