Movie Ticket Sales in Japan, 1983-2000
Japanese theater going has been in decline for a number of years. In 1983, ¥186 billion worth of tickets were sold. In 2000, just ¥171 billion worth of tickets were sold. Even worse for the Japanese film industry is that the share of those tickets sold for foreign films has steadily grown, reaching 68% in 2000. The charts below shows the relative box office shares for foreign and Japanese films exhibited in Japan. These charts are based on data from the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan as shown on the Japan Information Network <http://www.jin.jcic.or.jp/>.
