UCLA Center for East Asian Studies 

 In 1997, U.S. direct investment in China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan totalled $8.7 billion. The pie chart below shows that more than half of this amount went to Hong Kong investments. Of course, much of this was an indirect investment into China proper.
