1839 Commissioner Lin Zexiu, assigned to squelch the opium trade, arrived in Guangzhou (Canton).

1905 Japan captured the northeastern Chinese city of Mukden (Shenyang) during the Russo-Japanese War.

1912 General Yuan Shikai replaced Sun Yatsen as the provisional president of the Republic of China.

1922 Mahatma Gandhi was arrested by the British governors of India, tried for sedition, and sentenced to six years imprisonment.

1945 Some 300 United States bombers attacked Tokyo. This raid devastated the Japanese capital, killing tens of thousands of people.

1959 The Chinese military commander of Tibet invited the Dalai Lama to a theatrical performance. Suspecting that he was to be arrested, the Dalai Lama declined to attend. A Tibetan uprising was launched. By year's end, it had been crushed and the Dalai Lama was in exile in India, where he remains today.
