1934 Admiral Okada Keisuke took over as Japanese prime minister.
1935 Du Zhongyuan, the editor of Xinsheng zhoukan (New Life Weekly), was sentenced to
14 months imprisonment for publishing an article derogatory to the Japanese emperor.
1950 US Gen. Douglas MacArthur became commander-in-chief of the United Nations forces in
Korea.
1959 For the first time, an American was killed in combat in Vietnam.
1969 U.S. Pres. Richard Nixon announced plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Vietnam.
