This first part of an EU symposium series will focus on the mutual economic, political and social impacts of the accession and integration of the Central European countries into the European Union. The decision of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary to join the EU was historically momentous, full of promise and somewhat uncertain in expected outcomes. Now, three years later the integration of these countries into the EU can be viewed as generally successful and still quite promising.
