Cristian Mungiu’s highly acclaimed film won the 2007 Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the International Critics Prize, and was selected Best Foreign Language Film of 2007 by the LA and Chicago Film Critics Associations, among many other accolades. The film examines the experiences of young women in Romania in the 1980s, when contraceptives were unavailable and abortion was criminalized under the harsh rule of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Gail Kligman, Professor of Sociology, UCLA, who will comment on lessons to be learned from Romania’s reproductive policies. Camelia Davtyan, Associate Professor of Medicine, UCLA, and Bradford Prokop, M.D., will present personal perspectives on their experiences as medical students and physicians in Romania and the United States during periods when contraception was restricted and abortion was illegal.
