The story of the Varimezov family of brilliant Bulgarian traditional musicians begins at the end of the Ottoman Empire. The film traces the family’s musical legacy in parallel with the political history of Bulgaria from 1878 to the present. After the fall of communism in 1989, Ivan and Tzvetanka Varimezov brought this soulful tradition of song, music, and dance first to America and then to the world.
Timothy Rice has been traveling to Bulgaria since 1969 and filming musical performances there since 1987. This film is the next “chapter” in a book he wrote in 1994, May It Fill Your Soul: Experiencing Bulgarian Music. He is professor of ethnomusicology at UCLA and director of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. In 2008 the Bulgarian president awarded him the prestigious “Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius, 2nd class” for his contributions to the popularization abroad of Bulgarian culture.
