Latvia | DIR Andris Gauja
In a ramshackle Latvian farmhouse lives impoverished mother Zanda, her tough, destitute mother, her frisky children and a constant crowd of reckless, ill-washed neighbors whose idea of nightly entertainment is to get falling-down drunk and fight. Zanda is awaiting, with a mixture of hope and dread, the release from prison of the father of her children, whom she loves despite the fact that he's in jail for domestic violence. He's also her brother, a revelation that her friends treat with startling nonchalance. You won't know whether to laugh or cry at this wilder than fiction documentary about destitution, self-destruction, and the fine line between delusion and hope.
