Health Research Associate, The Pacific Institute for Women’s Health, Los Angeles, 1992–93. Assisted with focus groups at a local high school to investigate health and nutrition factors influencing the school participation and performance of adolescent girls. Used qualitative research methods for analysis, and researched appropriate literature for preparing journal articles. Produced and edited the 1995 Annual Report.

Completed nutritional studies and field evaluations of hand scales designed to identify low birth weight infants for traditional birth attendants and midwives. Trained field staff in focus group methodology, and advised on qualitative aspects of data collection; facilitated data entry and cleaning; and evaluated results in terms of sample size assumptions. Planned and implemented new teen family planning clinic by collaborating with the Los Angeles School District for marketing and outreach.
