Chancellor Gene Block accepts award from Committee of 100 on behalf of university

UCLA Today

UCLA was recently recognized by the Committee of 100, an organization comprised of 160 accomplished and prominent Chinese American leaders, for its longtime commitment to the development of U.S.-China relations. Chancellor Gene Block accepted the committee’s esteemed Award for Advancement of U.S.-China Relations on behalf of the university and gave remarks at the committee’s annual dinner and gala, which was held in Pasadena on April 19.

Widely regarded as a pioneer among American universities engaging China, UCLA has provided courses on Chinese culture, society, and history as early as 1930, and continues to be a leader in teaching, research and outreach involving China. The university, which presently holds 70 signed agreements with institutions in China, attracts large numbers of international students from China, and is home to a number of significant resources that promote China throughout the university and within the local community, including the Center for Chinese Studies and the Asian American Studies Center.

In addition to Block, UCLA was represented by nearly a dozen members of the faculty and staff, including Professors Cindy Fan, interim vice provost of international studies and the UCLA International Institute, Jason Cong, director of the UCLA-Peking University Joint Research Institute and Yunxiang Yan, director of the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies, and Susan Jain, executive director of the UCLA Confucius Institute and director of Academic Program Development (Summer Sessions).
