International Education Week highlights international studies, perspectives and research

IEW 2017 celebrated international studies and exchange at UCLA this year in a series of well-attended events across campus.

UCLA International Institute, December 4, 2017 — International Education Week (IEW) took UCLA by storm this year. As shown in the photo album above, the UCLA International Institute led a team of organizing partners in creating and hosting a series of high-profile events across campus from November 13 through 17, 2017 to celebrate international education and exchange on campus. In addition to these featured events, many campus units — such as UNEX, the Peace Corps recruiting office, the Burkle Center and even the University of California Trust (UK) Office in London — organized special events specifically for IEW.

Opportunities to learn about UCLA’s international education resources included discussions between American and international students at the UCLA Powell Conversation Café; information sessions on international fellowships, grants and internships at the International Education Resource Fair; a speech on health equity by Dr. Kelsey Martin, dean of the Geffen School of Medicine, at the UCLA Global Conversation; and imbibing international coffees and teas at the Dashew Center’s World Café.

Student-centered events over the course of the week included the Study Abroad Photo & Short Film Contest, a night of performances at Bruins Around the World, an open mic and storytelling gallery at Kerckhoff Hall (“The World at UCLA”) and the participatory “UCLA in a Map” event at Kerckhoff Patio.

International education at UCLA includes not only diverse study abroad programs, but degree programs in international studies and languages, international internships, graduate field research and collaborative research and exchange agreements with educational institutions across the world. Plus UCLA’s international students and faculty bring unique perspectives and cultural knowledge to campus. The tagline for IEW this year was “Connecting across borders” — something that UCLA, with offices in Europe and Asia and alumni around the globe, does on a daily basis.

The UCLA International Institute is grateful to the following campus units for their generous support of International Education Week 2017. Their support, together with that of the organizing partners — the UCLA International Institute, Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars, the International Student Leadership Coalition, UCLA Library and UCLA Study Abroad Office/ International Education Office — made the week's activities and events possible.
