UCLA Appoints Gilbert Chair in Israel Studies
Professor Arieh Saposnik, cultural historian of Israel and Zionism, joins UCLA faculty as Gilbert Chair in Israel Studies
The Israel Studies Program is delighted to welcome to UCLA the newly appointed Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Chair in Israel Studies, Arieh Saposnik. Professor Saposnik comes to UCLA from Arizona State University, where he held the Jess Schwartz Chair in Modern Hebrew Culture. Professor Saposnik’s scholarship focuses on the cultural history of Israel and Zionism. His widely-acclaimed book, Becoming Hebrew: The Creation of a Jewish National Culture in Palestine Before the First World War, was published by Oxford University Press in 2008. Professor Saposnik is joining UCLA’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures this fall.
