Grappling with Modernity: Judo and Making the Athletic Body in Pre-War Japan

A Colloquium with Prof. Jonathan Zwicker, University of Michigan

Using an analysis of Akira Kurosawa’s debut film, Sugata Sanshirō, which narrates the early history of judo, this talk will explore how judo is central to the ways that new concepts of body and spirit emerge and shift during the decades leading from the Meiji Period through World War II.
