South Korea's submission in the Oscars' foreign language category, Secret Sunshine tells the story of a young mother from Seoul who moves with her only child to the rural birthplace of her recently deceased husband. Jeon Do-youn, voted ‘best actress' at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, gives a remarkable performance as a fragile woman who faces daunting obstacles in her attempt to create a new life. "Built around a revelatory performance by Jeon Do-youn...Lee guides the film through its corkscrew reversals of light comedy and high melodrama, utter despair and flickerings of hope...that rare movie where it is as difficult to predict what will happen 10 minutes in as it is two hours later." - Scott Foundas, LA Weekly
