Grief may be a human universal but our means of coming to terms with death are as varied as the map of human cultures. In the Korean shaman rituals for the dead that anthropologist and American Museum of Natural History curator Laurel Kendall describes, the shamans enact a journey from home and village, through hell to paradise. Kendall describes how this process, danced and enacted by the shamans, transforms both the dead and the living.
