Description:

This intensive two-day seminar will provide participants with a unique opportunity to explore and understand the complexities of Latin American societies through the world's most popular sport, known as fútbol in Spanish or futebol in Portuguese. The course will examine the history and popular culture of soccer in Latin America and look at its intersections with issues of class, race, nationalism and globalization. Participants will gain valuable insight into how soccer has captured the imagination of Latin Americans and how it has influenced and has been influenced by social, political and economic factors in the region.

In addition to presentations providing cross-disciplinary analyses of the sport, the seminar will include curriculum resource sessions that will guide teachers through the themes engaged to develop methods and strategies for making content useful and meaningful in the classroom. The course will conclude with a visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to view the current exhibition Fútbol: The Beautiful Game

Guest presentations by soccer scholar David Goldblatt, author of the bestselling "The Ball is Round: A Global History of Soccer" (a "stunning book" - The Guardian) and the forthcoming "Futebol Nation: The Story of Brazil Through Soccer"

Open to current K-12 teachers in all disciplines.

$75 (Includes parking, course materials, museum entrance, lunch on April 12, breakfast & refreshments).

Course Requirements:

All partcipants are expected to be present and actively engaged both days of the seminar. In addition to classroom contact hours, paticipants are required to access reading materials, discussion questions, and other resources and assignments online via a course website (CCLE). 

To receive LAUSD salary credit, teachers are required to complete all assignments and readings and produce a curriculum development project that incorporates material learned into standards-based lesson plans centered on the workshop's themes.
