João Luiz Vieira is Professor of Cinema Studies at the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Niterói, Brazil. He received his Ph.D. from New York University with a dissertation, written under the direction of Robert Stam, on parody in Brazilian cinema. He is the author of Câmera-faça: o cinema de Sérgio Bianchi and Cinema Novo & Beyond as well as dozens of essays on topics ranging from D.W. Griffith and the Biograph Company, reflexivity in cinema, Japanese cinema, and multiple aspects of Brazilian cinema. He has served as visiting professor at the University of Iowa, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Warwik. Among the films Professor Vieira will be discussing are City of God and Slumdog Millionaire.
