João Adolfo Hansen (USP) is one the leading literary critics in Brazil.  A specialist in classical and early modern poetics and rhetoric, he is the author of six books and numerous articles on subjects ranging from theories of literary form to readings of canonical Brazilian authors such as Machado de Assis and Guimarães Rosa.  Two of his books, Alegoria: Construção e Interpretação da Metáfora (1986, 2nd ed. 2006) and Sátira e Engenho: Gregório de Matos e a Bahia do Século XVII (1989, 2nd ed. 2004) have become standard reading for literary studies both inside and outside of Brazil. The latter received the Prêmio Jabuti in 1990 in the category of best essay. Prof. Hansen is currently a visiting professor in the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA.  He has also recently been a visiting professor at Stanford University.
