L.A. Language Intensives

Chinese 8- Elementary Chinese (15 units)
M-F 10:00-12:00

Chinese 8 is equivalent to courses 1, 2, and 3. It includes an introduction to fundamentals of standard Chinese, including pronunciation, grammar, and Chinese characters, with emphasis on all four basic language skills -- speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing.

Chinese 10- Intermediate Intensive Chinese (15 units)
M-F 9:00-11:00
Chinese 10 is equivalent to courses 4, 5, and 6. It is designed to strengthen communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the use of grammar reviews, knowledge of idiomatic expressions, and both traditional and simplified characters. Completion of course 10 is equivalent to completion of course 6. Offered in summer only. Letter grading.

Chinese 100I- Advanced Intensive Chinese (12 units)
M-R 9:00-11:00
Chinese 100I is equivalent to courses 100A, 100B, and 100C. Couse materials are selected from contemporary Chinese publications, with emphasis on social sciences. Texts are analyzed for their linguistic features and social and cultural background. Class assignments will include readings, compositions, informal debates on topical issues, and oral presentations. Offered in summer only. P/NP or letter grading.

The Intensive Chinese Program at UCLA offers the equivalent of one year of instruction in only 7 weeks.

Language Intensives in L.A. is organized by the UCLA Center for World Languages and UCLA Summer Sessions with support from the UC Consortium for Language Learning and Teaching, the UCLA African Studies Center, UCLA Departments of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures, Linguistics, Slavic Languages, and Spanish & Portuguese.
