East Asia: Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, Taipei

UCLA is deeply connected to East Asia through alumni and numerous university partnerships. A UCLA delegation to East Asia led by Chancellor Gene Block and Vice Provost Cindy Fan in July 2013 strengthened existing student and faculty exchange programs, celebrated alumni group activities, and forged relationships with government and business leaders in these four destinations.

July 2013Promoting UCLA-Japan ties in Science and Technology

In Tokyo, Chancellor Block met with Yuichiro Anzai, President of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and Yoshinau Mishima, President of Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) to promote UCLA-Japan ties in science and technology.

Chancellor Block met with President YANG Pan-Chyr of National Taiwan University (NTU) and discussed potential areas of collaboration, including faculty and student exchanges and joint research. UCLA is proud to have more than 60 Bruins currently serving on the NTU faculty.

November 2013UCLA Outreach with Chinese University of Hong Kong

While in Hong Kong, Chancellor Block and members of the UCLA delegation met with Vice Chancellor and President Joseph Sung of Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Founded in 1963, CUHK is the second-oldest university in Hong Kong. With over 20 Bruins currently serving on its faculty, UCLA is proud of its many connections to the university.

November 2013Chancellor Block Visits Beijing

On July 1, 2013, Chancellor Block and the UCLA delegation attended a JRI Board meeting. Also while in Beijing, Chancellor Block and members of the UCLA delegation met with Dr. PENG Xuefeng, CEO and founder of Dacheng Law Offices at the firm's Beijing headquarters. Dacheng is the largest law firm in Asia, with some 4,000 attorneys and satellite offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.

Chancellor Block and members of the UCLA delegation met with The Honorable Hakuban Shimomura, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for Japan. Chancellor Block and Minister Shimomura discussed student exchange and new programs to increase the number of students who study abroad.

November 2013Strengthening Cultural and Scholarly Exchange in Beijing

In Beijing, Chancellor Block and the UCLA delegation met with Hanban (汉办). The Confucius Institute Headquarters is a Chinese public institution whose goal is to provide cultural teaching resources and services on a global level. Chancellor Block and China Scholarship Council (CSC) General Secretary LIU Jinghui signed an agreement extending UCLA and CSC's commitment to international scholarly exchanges between UCLA and China.

With 480 UCLA alumni in Hong Kong, another 280 students from Hong Kong studying on campus, and more than 60 UCLA students studying in Hong Kong during the academic year 2013-14, UCLA's connections to Hong Kong are abundant. An active alumni group in Hong Kong helps recruit potential students to UCLA and keeps us connected with this cosmopolitan and fast-paced city.

On July 1, 2013, Chancellor Block hosted a reception event for UCLA alumni, current and incoming students, and parents in Beijing. The event was held in Peking University's Global Village and was attended by over 200 people. UCLA alumnus James Ding spoke at the event.
