In June and July 2014, the UCLA International Institute organized a trip for Chancellor Block and Vice Provost Cindy Fan to Canberra, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Nanjing, Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo, where they met with high-level government officials and donors, celebrated newly established partnerships, and were welcomed by alumni, students, parents and supporters of UCLA in East Asia.

July 2014U.S. Ambassador to Japan

The Chancellor and the UCLA delegation had the honor of meeting U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy and UCLA alumna Cecile Shea, Press Attaché, at the American Embassy in Japan. Discussion centered on ways to encourage students to study abroad and to continue cooperation between UCLA, the Embassy and institutions in Japan.

July 2014Tokyo Alumni

While in Tokyo, the delegation met with Vic Murai (MBA '62) and congratulated him on being recently elected as the President of the Anderson Alumni Group. An intimate gathering of UCLA alumni and friends in Tokyo, coordinated by the Tokyo Alumni Association, provided an opportunity for UCLA supporters to meet and mingle with one another. Tokyo Alumni Association President Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa warmly welcomed the delegation and gave an update on alumni activities in Tokyo. Yuji Tsutsumi (Business Administration BS '65), another long-time friend of UCLA who attended the event, shared his ideas on how alumni can aid current and future students with studying abroad.

July 2014MOU signed with ECNU

Chancellor Gene Block and President CHEN Qun signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UCLA and East China Normal University (ECNU) during a visit to the ECNU downtown campus in Shanghai. Chancellor Block drew attention to the existing collaboration between UCLA and ECNU, including ECNU's provision of a space for UCLA Professor Yunxiang Yan's travel study course in Shanghai. Prior to meeting with President Chen, Chancellor Block visited Professor Yan's class and addressed questions from the 26 students enrolled that summer.

July 2014UCLA Delegation in Seoul

Chancellor Block and the delegation were joined by close to 200 alumni, students, parents, and friends for a reception to celebrate UCLA's presence in Seoul. Notable alumni Il SaKong (MBA '66, Management PhD '69) and James Kim (Economics BA '84) spoke to the guests, sharing their experiences at UCLA and the insights they gained there. The delegation later spoke with the leaders of the alumni group in Seoul during a breakfast meeting that generated fresh ideas for UCLA's involvement in South Korea. Alumnus James Kim also graciously hosted the delegation for a meeting that included fellow UCLA supporter and parent Paul Cho.

July 2014Meeting supporters in Shanghai

Over 200 supporters of UCLA, including alumni, students, parents, and friends, attended the 2014 “UCLA in Shanghai” reception. Guest speakers included Derek Hu (English BA '92) and Ken Wu (Business Economics BA '99). Derek encouraged alumni to become involved with the UCLA Alumni Association and Ken described how his education at UCLA has affected his life. Ken had earlier hosted the delegation for a dinner with fellow alumni, followed by a tour of the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation.

July 2014UCLA Global Classroom at Jinling High School

The UCLA Global Classroom Program for students at Jinling High School in Nanjing is designed to provide high-quality education to Chinese high school students who are interested in attending American universities. Principal Zou spoke to Chancellor Block and the UCLA delegation about the positive impact of the program, which has produced over 180 graduates since Spring 2010 — all of whom have been accepted to U.S. and/or Canadian universities.

July 2014Chancellor Block Interviewed in Hong Kong

Chancellor Block gave several interviews to media in Hong Kong in which he shared news of the UCLA's inauguration of an Asia Office. This office will give UCLA an increased presence in Asia and provide greater support to students, alumni, UCLA faculty and their research projects, as well as sustain other institutional partnerships in the area.

July 2014Chinese University of Hong Kong

During a one-day stop in Hong Kong, Chancellor Block visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), meeting President and Vice Chancellor Joseph Sung, Provost Benjamin Wah and UCLA alumnus Dr. Walton Li (medical superintendent of the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital). Discussion focused on potential student exchanges between UCLA and CUHK.

July 2014Alumnus Craig Ehrlich in Hong Kong

UCLA alumnus and friend Craig Ehrlich, an entrepreneur who formerly headed the GSM Association, met with the delegation in Hong Kong and agreed to serve on UCLA's Global Campaign Committee. (Update: Chancellor Block recently hosted Craig at his UCLA residence as a follow-up to their meeting in Hong Kong. While in Los Angeles, Craig gave the commencement speech to Anderson's Global Executive MBA class of 2014.)

July 2014Bruins in Public Health

UCLA public health students and alumni met with Chancellor Block to share their experiences in Vietnam and at UCLA. Two of the students were participating in the David Geffen School of Medicine's Short-Term Training Program. The alumni were impressed that they had the opportunity to meet the Chancellor across the world and were living proof of the positive impact Bruins are having worldwide.

July 2014High-level meetings in Vietnam

In Hanoi, the UCLA delegation met with several high-level governmental officials. Including U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam David Shear and the Vietnamese deputy ministers of health and science and technology, respectively. Shear provided a content for UCLA's impact in Vietnam in a presentation on the state of U.S.-Vietnamese relations. The deputy ministers both offered UCLA and Vietnam National University (VNU) support for existing and future collaborations. The day ended with a candid meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, who expressed his willingness to facilitate cooperation between the two universities.

June 2014Strengthening Partnerships in Vietnam

President Phan Thanh Binh of Vietnam National University (VNU) welcomed the delegation to two VNU campuses (the University of Science and Ho Chi Minh City). The delegation toured the Stem Cell Lab, where collaborations between UCLA and VNU are yielding promising results. Fuyu Tamanoi, associate director of the Center for Global Mentoring (CGM) and director of the STT Program-Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, described ongoing cancer and stem cell initiatives and the activities of the CGM. The meeting culminated in the signing of two MOU amendments which will permit the continuation and further development of cooperative projects in cancer research and education.

Channel NewsAsia aired an interview with Chancellor Block on Singapore Tonight in which he discussed both Singaporean students and their successes at UCLA and one of UCLA's Grand Challenges: sustainability.

June 2014Singaporean Alumni

UCLA Alumni in Singapore came out in full force to welcome the Chancellor and the UCLA delegation. Steve Chu shared his perspective as a Singaporean alumnus and a parent of a UCLA student. Some 90 Bruins met with the Chancellor at the “UCLA in Singapore” event, which was graciously hosted by parents Deepak Sharma and Susan Lim. Bruins of all ages were eager to learn the latest news from campus! Under the attentive guidance of Singaporean UCLA Alumni Club leaders, the delegation got a sense of the flavor of the city during a tour of food hawker stands at the local Chinatown Center Complex.

June 2014Chancellor Block Meets NTU President

On the lush campus of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Chancellor Block and the UCLA delegation met with Min Zhou and Lim Boon Hock, director and manager of the university's Chinese Heritage Center. Vice President of Research and Chief of Staff Professor Khin Yong Lam then discussed models for future collaboration in engineering, technology and business. His remarks led to an impromptu visit to the A*Star Remanufacturing Center, which uses environmentally friendly remanufacturing processes and serves as a bridge between academia and industry. A meeting with NTU President Bertil Andersson and senior administrators concluded the visit.

June 2014High-Level Meetings in Australia

Chancellor Block and Vice Provost for International Studies Cindy Fan met with the Honorable Julie Bishop, MP Foreign Minister, in Canberra, after which the Chancellor met with President Lin of Zhejiang University (ZJU). UCLA and ZJU have had strong partnerships in science and medicine in the past and are considering an expansion of their collaborative initiatives to include art history and archaeology. Chancellor Block then took part in the June 2014 Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Presidents' Meeting in Canberra, one of 18 university presidents in attendance.
