Dr. SHIH Choon Fong, Chairman of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), who is also the President and Vice Chancellor of the National University of Singapore, visited UCLA January 23, where he met with Chancellor Albert Carnesale and UCLA International Institute Vice Provost Geoffrey Garrett. Dr. Shih was accompanied by Prof. Lawrence Loh, Secretary General of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Dr. Loh is also Associate President of the National University of Singapore

In their meeting they discussed the APRU Presidents’ Meeting agenda for 2003 and other APRU matters. Dr. Shih reported that the National University of Singapore has established two new campuses – one for science and technology, and the other for medicine and life sciences.

Drs. Shih and Loh were also very interested in the School of the Arts & Architecture and School of Theater, Film and Television, since they are hoping to establish similar schools at their university in the future. While at UCLA they met with Dean Christopher Waterman, School of the Arts & Architecture. Gary Bailard, Production Coordinator in the Department of Film and Television, gave them a tour of UCLA's Film and TV facilities.

Their visit was arranged by the UCLA International Institute's International Visitors Bureau. They were escorted while on the campus by IVB staff member Gohar Grigorian and Harout Semerdjian, Ph.D. student in History.

The Association of Pacific Rim Universities was formed in 1997. It aims to foster cooperation in education, research, and enterprise. Currently it has 35 member universities from 16 economies in the Pacific Rim.  UCLA is one of the members.
