New Course Focusing on Korean and Chinese Art

Spring 2004 Graduate Seminar Selected Topics in Korean and Chinese Art (243/260 B) Dodd 221, Wednesday 2:00-4:00 p.m. Instructors: Professors Burglind Jungmann and Hui-shu Lee

The seminar will explore painting in the context of relations between Korea and China during the late Koryo (918-1392) and early Choson (1392-1910) periods.
Requirements include weekly readings, class participation in discussion, a presentation on work in progress, and the completion of a substantial original research paper.

April 21 -     Special session on "The Royal Patronage of Art of the Choson Period,"
conducted by Yi  Song-mi, Professor of Korean Art History, Academy of Korean Studies, Songnam, Korea

April 28 -     Reconstructing the Korean perspective on Chinese art: Chinese painters and calligraphers of the Song and earlier periods represented in Prince Anpyong's collection

May 5 -       Reconstructing the Korean perspective on Chinese art: Chinese painters and calligraphers represented in Prince Anpyong's collection (Yuan I)

May 12 -     Lecture on "The Production and Preservation of Royal Portraits during the early Choson Period," by Cho In-soo, Professor of Korean Art History at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles

May 19 -     Reconstructing the Korean perspective on Chinese art: Chinese painters and calligraphers represented in Prince Anpyong's collection (Yuan II)

May 26 -    Work-in-progress presentations I
