UCLA International Institute, May 29, 2020 — Professor Min Zhou, director of the UCLA Asia Pacific Center and Walter & Shirley Wang Endowed Chair in U.S.-China Relations & Communications, has been awarded the 2020 Contribution to the Field Award of the Asia and Asian America Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA). Zhou has a joint appointment to the departments of sociology and Asian American Studies at UCLA.
The Contribution to the Field Award recognizes professors who have worked to build up the fields of Asian and/or Asian American Studies within their universities/colleges and the discipline at large through critically engaged pedagogy, curriculum building, institution building, grass roots organizing, mentoring and scholarly contributions.
The 2020 award commemorates Zhou for her work in both sociology and ethnic studies. It will be officially conferred during a virtual ceremony on August 8, 2020, as part of the ASA online event that will replace its annual conferece this year (see program for August 8–11 "virtual engagement event").
As the glowing recommendation letter written by her peers makes clear:
“Professor Zhou’s contribution to the field is multifaceted. In research, she has developed or refined some of the most widely used theoretical concepts in migration, diasporic, and Asian American studies, such as ethnic enclave, ethnic capital, segmented assimilation, social status compensation, simultaneous embeddedness, hyper-selectivity, ethnic system of supplementary education, the model of ethnic social relations and the subject-centered approach…
...
Professor Zhou’s research interests in migration and development, the sociology of Asia and Asian America, race and ethnicity, the new second generation and urban sociology, with a range of theories and methods, along with her excellence in teaching/mentoring and service records, make her the best-qualified scholar for the 2020 Contribution to the Field Award.”
The UCLA International Institute congratulates Professor Zhou on this well-deserved career honor.
